You Are Woman, I Am Man Tee Design #1

You Are Woman. I Am Man. Let’s Kiss…  That’s not how it works in real life, people. It can lead to this.

New tee design for the Funny Girl Broadway revival. This design is for the ‘You Are Woman, I Am Man’ song; it’s such a good song (*FART). The producers of the musical have not given me key art, so I’m basing this design off the original Funny Girl poster.  This design was hand-drawn to a nice medium/rare.

Don’t Rain on My Parade Tee Design #3

Third-round designs for the Don’t Rain on My Parade tee. My previous designs for were too literal. I drew Barbra Streisand during her opening line to the song telling her ditzy friends to not get in the way of her dreams.

Barbra Streisand After Drinking Too Much Tang

Don't Rain on My Parade Tee Design #2

My first Don’t Rain on My Parade design didn’t feature Barbra Streisand in the design. Considering this is the most iconic song in the musical, I’m rethinking my inks a tid bit. Here’s a preliminary sketch for the new illustrated tee design; this is a simple drawing of Barbra Streisand minus her nose.

Alvin Ailey American dance Theater Dancer Sketch Tee

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater Dancer Sketch Tees

My first roommate in college was a bit odd. His name was Saker. One day, I walked in on him wearing karate pants and nothing else… He was playing Dance Dance Revolution

These guys I drew dance better than he did.

I designed a series of simple “Dancer Sketch” tees for the 2012 Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater apparel collection.

I'm the Greatest Star Tee Design #1

The Talent. The Hair. The Star.

Here is a preliminary t-shirt design for the I’m the Greatest Star musical number from Funny Girl. Fanny Brice [Barbra Streisand] hits it big in the movie so I figured in some alternate universe Barbra Streisand might really be a star in Hollywood. This design mimics the Hollywood Walk of Fame. For those of you who aren’t familiar with the Hollywood Walk of fame, I’ve added a picture of a talented young actor’s star for reference.

The design is gold foil with 2-screen colors.

Hello Gorgeous Tee Design #1

The Funny Girl apparel collection continues with Hello Gorgeous! For those of you just tuning in, I’m working on apparel designs for the Broadway revival of Funny Girl, the musical that made people think Barbra Streisand had talent. Today’s design is not based off a song; it’s based off the film’s intro. Fanny Brice, dressed in some sort of leopard-skin coat/hat PETA-hating combo, walks up to a Broadway theater with her name on the marquee. She inside, approaches a squeeky-clean mirror and says to herself….

Hello Gorgeous

Now I don’t condone “Barbra Streisand is hott”-thinking individuals, but I DO admit they exist. Here is a sneaker-head-colored design with hand-drawn type and the wild animal hat to top if off. 2-screen design on tees and canvas bag.

My Alvin Ailey Dancer Sketches

Currently starting work on the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater 2012 Apparel Collection, in collaboration with the Araca Group. Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater is a world renown dance company. The Alvin Ailey performing arts community plays a crucial social role using the beauty and humanity of the African American heritage and other cultures to unite people of all races, ages and backgrounds. A U.S. Congressional resolution designated Alvin Ailey as “a vital American cultural ambassador to the world,” one that celebrates the uniqueness of the African-American cultural experience and the preservation and enrichment of the American modern dance heritage.

They wanted this year’s collection to have a couple of hand-drawn visuals. Here are some hand sketches I drew to get the designs going. They are based on the Alvin Ailey’s latest photo shoot.

Don't Rain on my Parade Tee

Don't Rain on My Parade Tee Design #1

Back on Funny Girl detail. For those of you just tuning into my dial, I’m designing an apparel collection for the Broadway revival of Funny Girl [in collaboration with the Araca Group], the musical that launched Barbra Streisand’s career into an alternate universe where real critics think she has T.A.L.E.N.T.

Don’t Rain on My Parade is easily the most iconic song in Funny Girl. Fanny Brice [Barbra Streisand] is trying to make it in the world is wants to head off to NYC to be with her newly-found boyfriend who also happens to be stinkin’ rich. But who wants to be the voice of reason for her? Who wants to stop her from making the mistake of taking a damn chance in this cruel world? Her friends. All her friends tell her to not go. Way to project the loss of your own hopes’n'dreams…. Fanny [funny name when you think about it] wants nothing to do with this and insta-takes off for NYC with nothing but an orange dress and some LV luggage. Don’t Rain on My Parade: a.k.a Don’t Sh*t on My  Pipe Dreams.

Don't Rain on My Parade Tee Designs #1

This design plays off the original artwork, and is influenced old Saul Bass movie posters. Simple, yet recognizable. The typographical playfulness of the word ‘Parade’ makes this design in my opinion. The off-the-shoulder screen in the second tee adds that ‘touch of the gods’ you want. These tees are definitely taking the song title literally. Due to how iconic this song is, I’m thinking the design is absolutely going to need to have Barbra Streisand…

ON THE NEXT: NICO BATTLES BARBRA’S LEFT NOSTRIL
Will Nico draw Barbra Streisand’s pelican nose to decorate this design? Tune in for another exciting episode.

Funny Girl Barbra Streisand

An Actor Staring at Barbra Streisand's Nose

I shall be designing, in collaboration with the Araca Group, an apparel collection for the Broadway revival of 1964′s Funny Girl starring Barbra Streisand‘s nose. This musical hasn’t seen the light of day since the late 1960s. Funny Girl comes back to Broadway in the Post-Modern era we live in of just re-hashing the old over and over and over. Why create new ideas, plots and plays when the ideas that people came up with decades ago are already money-making machines perfect?

Any who, the first step is RESEARCH, specially for a humongotor two-month design project like this. TWO MONTHS?! That’s not problem for design; I know designers who work on one project or website year-round. I can survive that. The problem here in lies in the fact that I do not like musicals. Even in Disney movies as a kid, when people broke into song for absolutely no reason whatsoever, I would look around to see if any one else was thinking “we don’t do that in our daily lives…how would I know the words to a song you’re making up on the spot?” What’s worse, within the realm of fantastical musicals, this particular musical starred none other than the beautiful, super-talented likes of Ms. Barbra Streisand.

Skipping specifics, the movie is two-and-a-half hours of singing and dancing; it’s the rags-to-riches story of Fanny Brice’s [Barbra Streisand] rise to acting stardom. She starts off poor and ugly; ends up rich, famous, and ugly. Fanny brice gets casted as a comedienne on a stage show and blows up like Cocoa Puffs. Some rich’n'handsome Gentile falls in love with her, and they get married. Little does Fanny Brice know, the man has a gambling addiction. Long story short, don’t waste your time watching Funny Girl.

So what should I do? An apparel collection based on an extremely dull musical/film is due in two months. For the most part, this is my next eight weeks of creative juices and keep-the-coffee-coming-to-relieve-boredomnessness. Easy-Peezy! Create an apparel collection of clothes I would wear and think is cool’n'hip regardless of it being based on Barbra Streisand.

Expect some spankin’ new apparel designs and souvenirs based mostly on the big glitz’n'glam musical numbers from Funny Girl.
